A trip to Cape Town is not complete without going up Table Mountain and the Table Mountain Cable Car is still the quickest and easiest way of doing so. Table Mountain is world renowned, standing at its highest point 1,085 metres above sea level, the views and scenery up there is nothing less than sensational. The Cable cars hold around 65 people and actually revolve around inside so no matter where you begin facing you will receive a full panoramic view of the area before you reach the top.
The top station stands on the Western end of the mountain affording visitors magnificent views over the city, Robben Island out to sea, Camps Bay, the rest of the mountain and the Twelve Apostles. There is an abundance of photo opportunities, a restaurant open throughout the day and a souvenir shop.
If you want to explore the mountain further then there are numerous walks of varying lengths available, just around the top station there is over 2km of pathways to follow which will give you views over Cape Town, Table Bay, Robben Island, the Cape Flats and the Cape Peninsula. Alternatively there are also free guided tours available every day at 10am and midday. For those wanting to explore a little further there are many longer walks available. It is advisable that you take a map with you, stay on the paths, and where possible to be in a group for safety reasons. The countryside, fauna and views are phenomenal, I especially recommend trying to get over to the reservoirs but don’t go on long walks without your own map because cloud can come over quickly and you can get lost even though most paths are well trodden and clearly marked.
Another remarkable factor about Table Mountain is the extra-ordinary floral biodiversity. In laymen’s terms Table Mountain alone has more species of plants that can be seen on it that the entire British Isles, more than 1,500 species. Table Mountain National Park is the richest single floristic area in the entire world! Table Mountain National Park is also a Unesco World Heritage Site.
Prices for a round trip (up and down) are for adults R160 and R80 for children (between 3 & 18). Student (with valid student cards) and SA Senior Citizens discounts apply. Student and Senior citizen rate is only valid on Fridays. The Cableway does not take bookings due to the fact that the cable cars can only operate in optimal weather conditions. The temperature at the top cable station can be cooler than on the ground. It is advisable to take a pullover or a jacket - and sunscreen - just in case...
To date 19 million visitors have taken a trip up Table Mountain, we highly recommend you join them!
